Understanding Hospice

What is Hospice?

Hospice is a special healthcare option for patients and families who are faced with a terminal illness that provides palliative (comfort) care when curative treatment is no longer an option. Care takes place in the home or a home-like setting such as a nursing home or an assisted living. Hospice views the patient, family and disease process from a holistic perspective addressing the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of each patient and family.

Philosophy of Hospice:

Hospice care is based on a philosophy of care, which embraces death as a natural part of the cycle of life. Hospice care recognizes several important facts: dying patients and their families have special needs; compassionate and high quality palliative and supportive care is needed during the last months of a patient’s life; the patient’s desire to die with dignity should be respected; and, in the terminal phases of a person’s life, the need for quality of life often becomes more important than its quantity.

Hospice offers care to all terminally ill persons and their families without regard to age, diagnosis, gender, sexual orientation, race, creed, disability, place of residence or ability to pay.
